High school students and their parents should make plans to attend DISD's College 101 at Southern Methodist University on Thursday, May 17 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Students and parents will learn much about what can be done now to prepare for college:

Learn about the admission process, financial aid, scholarships and more
Meet university representatives
No charge to attend
Snacks will be provided
Sessions will be held in English and Spanish

Sign up on the first day of the Dallas Zoo’s annual photo contest. The annual competition is open to everyone from children to experienced professionals. Categories include: children (12 and under), junior (ages 13 to 18 years), novice (beginners to non-professionals), and advanced (considerable experience to professionals). City Café To Go will be hosting a reception for the photography installation, "John Derryberry Xtra Large: The Big Picture," on Friday, May 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The café features 20 commissioned portraits that capture the extremes of energy and serenity in a larger than life scale. This show introduces John's more artistic style of portraiture, meant to be hung as you would a work of art.

The reception will include hors d'oeuvres provided by City Café and champagne compliments of Secco Italian Bubbles from Tuscany. This event is open to the public and children are welcome.

Night Lights is a program that serves families with special needs in the Dallas area by giving them a respite night from 6 - 10pm on the first and third Fridays of the month. Children with special needs and their siblings are welcome to come and enjoy different activities such as arts & crafts, computer games, a special show, gym time, and much more. Every child is assisted by a volunteer. Children are admitted between the ages of 6mo - 18yrs. Check our calendar of events on our website for specific dates as we will be adding more. ADVANCED REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Visit our website for information regarding registration details and donations.

Our facility is easy to navigate for people with special needs and our playgrounds are super accommodating to our wheelchair friends. Everything about our events are planned with children and their special needs in mind. Our computer lab is outfitted with adaptations for those who can't type. The game room has an Xbox 360 w/ kinect that's perfect for those with little or no motor skills. The therapy dogs are specially trained to interact with our kids. Nurses are trained specifically for our population and actually only work with patients with special needs, and even our police officer is trained in mental health and is the father of an adult with special needs. Also, our volunteers are educated, and in most cases, experienced with the unique needs of our kids.

Join us for a day of fun as we walk to raise awareness and support for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. This year's fifth annual walk is presented by Wal-Mart and sponsored by Texas Retina Associates. The walk kicks-offs at 10:00 a.m. at Winfrey Point at White Rock Lake.

This year's walk will feature kid-friendly bounce houses, face painters, cotton candy and snow cones. For the first time, attendees will be able to try on simulation glasses to understand what it's like to live with Retinitis Pigmentosa or Macular Degeneration.

Proceeds from the event will benefit more than 10 million Americans who are losing their sight to degenerative retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa and Usher Syndrome.

It's not too soon to start thinking about summer reading! Shop for like new, affordable vacation books and media for adults and children at the Audelia Road Library Friends' monthly book sale on May 19 from 1 - 4 PM in the library lobby. The library is located at 10045 Audelia Road. To contribute items for the sale, look for the donation bid under the Friends' display table near the library entrance. Proceeds benefit the library.

The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness and let women know the signs of Preeclampsia, a life-threatening hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. Money raised will support education programs and aids in research.

The entry fee for adults is $25 and $10 for children.
