Dallas Lutheran School made quite an impact on the TAPPS State Art Competition.  The school placed 2nd overall in state with many first place showings.  The school's art department has seen great success in recent years following the calling of Ms. Sylvia Braun, Visual Arts Teacher, and Art Department Chair at Dallas Lutheran School.

Competing in the state wide TAPPS Art Competition, consist of creating and submitting pieces in different media categories.  Each school may only submit three pieces in each category such as Drawing in Black and White or Printmaking.  The school placed high in many categories.  This emphasis on exposing students to a wide variety of media is part of Braun's philosophy in teaching art.

"I like to encourage students to try all types of art.  Some students may be discouraged to do art because they don't feel successful creating a drawing, but their skill might be in sculpture or photography.  But I also feel it is important to teach technical skills so students will be able to communicate their ideas more successfully to a wider audience.  For younger students, I want to focus on the fact that art can teach them problem solving and train them not to give up when they face a problem but enjoy solving it."-Sylvia Braun

Opening Chapel 2022

As you may have seen when driving by 8494 Stults Rd, aka: Dallas Lutheran School, the tornado damaged building has been demolished.  Plans are underway for the new campus buildings.  The school has hired the architectural firm, HKS, known locally for AT&T Stadium, JP Morgan Chase Regional Headquarters, as well as many other notable Dallas landmarks.  The plans for the new campus will be on display in the temporary offices of Dallas Lutheran School the first of the year 2022.

The construction has not slowed activity on campus though! Classes resumed August 17th in the newly constructed "Pride Lands"; the temporary classroom block on the west side of campus. The Dallas Lutheran School Drama Department just announced the fall play: "You Can't Take It With You" by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman.  The Robotics team is forming, and the first football game of the season is schedule Friday, August 27th. You can see God's work in this place and see the celebration of the school's rebuilding mantra in action: Rise Up, Rebuild, and Rejoice, Nehemiah 2:18.

Dallas Lutheran School is the proud beneficiary of Jonathon G.’s culminating Boy Scout project. When asked about the project, the school's faculty and staff were deeply humbled by his response:

“I chose DL for my Eagle Scout Project because I felt like I needed to give back to my school as a thank you for all they’ve done for me. DL has had such a great impact on my life that’s why I’ve chosen to go to this school since 7th grade. From the teachers that believe in me to the great friends I’ve made here. This school has been a second home for me and I wanted to show my gratitude.

The project itself: I had some ideas at first like paint the concession stand outside or make a walkway to the field, but I saw the old benches outside and said I think some new benches would look really nice. I asked Mr. Bangert for permission and then got started. The benches were going to look like the ones in the entrance, it took us about a month to get it finished. I had a bunch of my friends and people from my Boy Scout troop help me with it. It was a long process, but I think they turned out great.”

We think so too, Jonathan! Thank you!

Dallas, Texas, November 30th, 2018 - Six-man football was developed in 1934 by Stephen Epler in Chester, Nebraska, as an alternative means for small high schools to field a football team during the Great Depression. As of the 2017–2018 alignments from UIL, TAPPS, TAIAO, TCAF, and T-CAL, the state of Texas has 262 six-man football teams.

Game Play

Six-man is a fast-moving game played on an 80-yard-long field. All six players are eligible to be receivers. On offense, three linemen are required on the line of scrimmage at the start of the play.

Dallas Lutheran School won its first state title last year.

The team went 10-1 in the TAPPS conference beating Austin Veritas 54-48 in the 2017 Division 1 Six Man State Championship game in Waco. They are up against Austin Veritas again tonight for the final 4. If Dallas Lutheran wins tonight they will be defending their state championship playing in Waco on December 6, 2018.

Returning All State players Isiah Sampson, Sam Chapman, and Athan Georgalis, including the top running back in TAPPS Isaiah Sampson. Isaiah ran over 4000 all-purpose yards last year and led the division in touchdowns.

DLS is 9-1 and is the favorite to repeat for BACK to BACK championships.

6-Man in the Movies

The Slaughter Rule, released in 2002, used six-man football as played in Montana. The film contains a brief explanation of how the game of six-man football is played. The title refers to a rule in which a game is called in the second half if one team gains a 45-point advantage over the other. In other states, it is referred to as the mercy rule. When invoked, one team is said to have "45ed" the other.

Dallas Lutheran has "45ed" many of its opponents this year and hopes to win their second TAPPS State Championship. Not bad for a small school of 175 students… and that includes the middle school!
It reminds us of the basketball movie Hoosiers, but here in Texas.

If you want to know more about the little team that could, call Christine Wondoloski, Admissions Director.

Dallas Lutheran School Competes in Robotics Competition

Contributed by: LeAnne Langholz

The Dallas Lutheran School Robotics Team recently competed in a robotics competition. The challenge was for teams to design and build a robot to collect trash from the oceans to save the turtles and sea life. The “Current Events” theme had students balance and move on 2 x 4s, simulating the ocean currents to collect water bottles and ping pong balls representing trash to score points. The competition was stiff, but Dallas Lutheran had a great showing, ending up just outside the chance to move on to playoffs.  Congratulations to the entire team on a job well done.
