Lake Highlands Town Center continues to generate controversy

As the Dallas City Council gathers to debate additional funding for the Lake Highlands Town Center, residents of Lake Highlands continue to try and make their opinions on the area heard. Keri Mitchell of the Advocate wrote an article on how some residents are requesting a size limit on grocery anchor of the town center.

Several residents fear that just another generic grocery store, such as a Tom Thumb, will be erected in the town center. They would much rather have a unique, organic grocer be the face of the Lake Highlands Town Center. Others are afraid that a new Tom Thumb could disrupt the current establishments. JAH Realty, owner of the Royal Highlands Plaza at Royal and Skillman, created and funded "Concerned Lake Highlands Citizens" in an attempt to protect its own property, which already has a Tom Thumb.

Sue Hounsel of the office of economic development informed the Advocate that the city is "reluctant to do anything overly heavy-handed. We might restrict it to the point where nothing can happen, at least in today's market.

"I know this grocer thing is a big topic, but tomorrow's decision is not going to dictate a grocery store size one way or another. I think that will continue to be a topic of discussion as we go on."

Councilman Jerry Allen has taken notice of people's concerns about the town square and their call for a size limit on the grocery anchor and said, "That's not something I'm going to consider doing tomorrow. The TIF [tax increment financing] Board hasn't talked about it or broached that issue, nor has the economic development [staff], and I do not intend to limit it at this moment in time."
