The number of days left until school starts can now actually be counted on one hand. Students in Lake Highlands are undoubtedly trying to make the most of their few remaining days of freedom. However, there have been quite a few changes at several of the Lake Highlands schools that students should be aware of.
There will be several new faces at Lake Highlands High School in 2011. Notably, the Wildcats welcome Michael McDonald as a new assistant principal for the school. Lake Highlands High School also has new coaches for the volleyball team and the swimming team.
The Wildcat volleyball team bid farewell to Melissa Crown over the summer after her husband was transferred over to Europe. Crown, in her two years at Lake Highlands High School, won consecutive District 9-5A titles. But, with Crown’s departure comes new opportunity and the team welcomed new head coach Michele Massey earlier this summer. Massey was a former assistant coach at Hebron High School, which won the 5A state title in 2010.
The new swim team coach will also have some big shoes to fill. Kyle Horne is replacing Dave Carter as the head coach of the Lake Highlands swim team. Last year, Carter was named the District 10-5A Girls Coach of the Year. Horne hails from Cypress Ridge High School in Houston.
The Lake Highlands Freshman Center is also welcoming a new addition to their staff in the music department. Heather Sharp will be the new choir teacher for the Freshman Center. She hails from Richardson West Junior High and was named Richardson ISD Teacher of the Year previously.
Lake Highlands Elementary has reason to celebrate besides the start of the new school year. Their principal, Kim Sullivan, was voted Elementary Principal of the Year by the Excellence in Education Foundation of Richardson ISD.
