Summer Break is almost here for the students of Richardson Independent School District and that means it's time to kick back, relax and enjoy life. However, in hopes of keeping minds sharp and fresh, Lake Highlands High School has released its summer reading list.

Pre-AP and AP students are required to read certain books before school begins again in August.

AP English IV

  • Montana 1948 by Larry Watson
  • All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy OR Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

AP English III

  • The Adventures of Huck Finn by Mark Twain
  • Their Eyes were Watch God by Zora Neale Hurston OR A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah

Pre-AP English II

  • A Separate Peace by John Knowles

Students that are in on-level classes are encouraged to read over the summer to keep their minds working and fresh. Extra credit will be given presenting a book talk on any material read. But, any on-level student that does not read over the summer will have to read a book the first week of class. Students are not required to read any specific book but there guidelines on which books will count:

Incoming Sophomore

  • At least 150 pages
  • No movie
  • Not a graphic novel
  • Nothing too inappropriate/graphic in their book talk or presentation

Incoming Junior

  • At least 200 pages
  • No movie
  • Not a graphic novel
  • Nothing too inappropriate/graphic in their book talk or presentation

Incoming Senior

  • At least 250 pages
  • No movie
  • Not a graphic novel
  • Nothing too inappropriate/graphic in their book talk or presentation
