For people that like to gorge themselves over the holiday but then feel guilty afterwards, there's still time to sign up for the New Year's 5-Mile Run near White Rock Lake. The cool weather and lack of people on the road will make for a fun and relaxing run.

The race begins north of White Rock Lake at Flagpole Hill. The scenic route runs north on Goforth, swings left on West Lawther before going right onto a jogging trail up to a turnaround point at Fair Oaks. At this point, runners will head on back the way they came until they cross the finish line.

Registration for the event is at the RunOn! store on Mockingbird Lane. All participants that pre-registered are guaranteed a 100-percent cotton, long-sleeved t-shirt. However, in order to receive the shirt, runners that pre-registered must claim their shirt before race day registration closes. Runners that don't pre-register can still get a shirt while supplies last.

There will be an award for first place overall male and female, as well as first place for masters male and female. The top runners from multiple age groups will also be awarded, as will runners from multiple weight groups. There are also relay teams available for those that don't like to run solo. Runners must present at the awards ceremony to receive their award.

Refreshments will be served after the race. Runners will get their pick of Gatorade, sodas, beer and a variety of fresh fruit. It's a great way to start off the new year.
