The Plano West football team's air attack met its match when it was run down by the Lake Highlands football team's powerful run game on Friday, September 7 at Wildcat-Ram Stadium. The Wildcats shocked Plano West, 34-19, to win their first game of the 2012 season.

The Lake Highlands running game wore down the defense of Plano West as the game went on. The Wildcats had two 100-yard rushers in quarterback Trent Jones - 164 yards on 16 carries - and running back Elbert Landry, who had 119 yards on 20 carries. Lake Highlands almost had a third 100-yard rusher in Tyler Hughes, but he fell just short with 92 yards on eight rushing attempts.

Jones' running game made up for his poor passing game. He completed six of his 13 passing attempts for only 74 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. Wide receiver Jamarice Preston caught three of Jones' passes for 59 yards.

Plano West quarterback Zach Norris did his best to keep Plano West close to Lake Highlands. He completed 15 of his 20 passing attempts for 270 yards and two touchdowns. His top wide receiver, Austin Copeland, had six catches for 115 yards and a touchdown.

However, the Plano West offense was undone by turnovers. They had three fumbles on the game, two of which were recovered by the Lake Highlands defense. They also consistently handed the Wildcats good field position - the Wolves punted three times in the game for a total of 47 yards, which is just barely more than an average of 15 yards per punt.

Lake Highlands will finish up their non-district portion of the schedule next week when they travel to Rowlett High School on Friday, September 14. Kick-off for the game is at 7:30 p.m.
