Of the 10 teachers selected by the Richardson Independent School District to be honored as the 2011-2012 STARS (Superior Teaching Achievements in RISD) teachers of the year, five of them hail from the Lake Highlands community. The teachers were selected by RISD Superintendent Dr. Kay Waggoner and the RISD Excellence in Education Foundation.

The five Lake Highlands teachers that were selected are:

  • Alisa Bettega - Merriman Park Elementary - 3rd Grade
  • Kyle Griffis - Forest Meadow Junior High - Texas History/TAP Mentor
  • Katy Phinney - Skyview Elementary - Pre-Kingergarten
  • Ashley Rich - Moss Haven Elementary - 5th Grade
  • Hunter Wood - Lake Highlands High School - AP English/English III/Debate

The STARS winners were all nominated by their school and were surprised in their classrooms by the selection committee members, Superintendent Dr. Kay Waggoner and representatives of the RISD Excellence in Education Foundation. The foundation is a non-profit that works directly for all RISD students and staff.

The teachers received flowers, balloons and an oversized check for $1,000. The winners will also be honored at the Excellence in Education Foundation Gala (April 13) and the REA/Board of Trustees Banquet (April 13).
