League of Women Voters is hosting a panel presentation about the proposed Home Rule initiative at free public educational meetings on May 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Skyline High School, on May 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Harry Stone Recreation Center, and Fireside Recreation Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to inform Dallas Independent School District (DISD) voters about:
- home rule in the Texas Education Code,
- the status of DISD and its students,
- the elected trustee structure and benefits to DISD students, teachers, and the community under the trustee structure,and home rule, the benefits to DISD students, teachers, and the community under the proposed home rule structure, and the petition process.
After the panelists have spoken, there will be audience questions which are written on cards for the panelists, and panelists will respond with their answers, and an open microphone for 10 minutes when citizens can make their own comments. Every effort is being made to have a Spanish translator at each meeting.
Informed citizen participants will decide what is best for DISD students, families, and the community in a democratic society. The League of Women Voters makes democracy work.
