By the end of their thrilling, double-overtime game, Lake Highlands and Jesuit had combined for over 1,100 yards and more than 100 points. Jesuit had a juggernaut offense but the Wildcats hung in there, exchanging blows with the Rangers the entire game. But, in the end, Lake Highlands came up just short and fell to Jesuit by a final score of 49-42.
Despite being outgained by more than 150 yards, the Wildcats were able to keep pace offensively thanks to several big plays that resulted in touchdowns. Four of Lake Highlands' touchdowns came on plays of more than 25 yards, the longest of which was a 60-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. The passing game came to life against the Rangers, as quarterbacks Micheal Ketchmark and Trent Jones combined for 236 passing yards and three touchdowns.
The running game played a major part as well. Running backs DeVonte Sunwenghan exploded for 136 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries while Jacobi Johnson rushed 12 times for 91 yards and a score. As a team, Lake Highlands gained 247 yards on the ground on just 27 carries for an average of 9.15 yards per carry.
The Wildcats had no answer on defense for Jesuit quarterback Brian Buell. Buell completed 33 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns. His leading receiver, Jake Oliver, caught 15 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. The running backs weren't slouching either. Running back Garrett Van de Ven rushed 21 times for 182 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner in the second overtime.
With the loss, Lake Highlands fell to fourth in district 9-5A with Richardson Berkner leapfrogging the Wildcats. Lake Highlands now has an even tougher game awaiting them: a matchup away against undefeated Skyline. Kick off for next week's game is Friday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m.
