The Lake Highlands football team (4-3, 3-1) are currently sitting third in District 9-5A, but they’ll be hard-pressed to stay there with two of their remaining three games coming against the district’s best. Fortunately for the Wildcats, they’ll at least get to play the district’s No. 2 team, Jesuit, at home on Friday, October 21.

Lake Highlands was riding a three-game winning streak heading into last week’s match-up against rival Richardson Berkner. The Rams shocked the favored Wildcats by scrapping out a 16-13 victory. With that loss, Lake Highlands fell into a three-way tie for third place with Richardson and Richardson Berkner. However, due to a superior conference record, the Wildcats hold the edge over both teams.

The Wildcats will need to rely on their run game to keep pace with Jesuit’s high-powered offense, as well as keeping the ball out of the Rangers’ hands. Jacobi Johnson and DeVonte Sunwenghan will be charged with carrying the load for Lake Highlands. On the season, Johnson has rushed for 475 yards and five touchdowns while Sunwenghan has 358 yards and seven touchdowns. Sunwenghan is also the leading receiver for the Wildcats with 17 receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown.

On the other side of the ball, the Lake Highlands defense will face one of the most prolific passing squads in the district. Jesuit boasts two quarterbacks with more than 1,000-yards passing so far on the season. Brian Buell is the top passer for the Rangers with 1,359 yards and 17 touchdowns; however, second quarterback Jack Brezette is no slouch either with 1,064 yards and 13 touchdowns. Their top target is wide receiver Jake Oliver, who has caught 72 passes for 1,072 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Kickoff for the game is at 7:30 p.m. Don’t miss this game between two of the district’s top teams.
