When Merriman Park Elementary PTA Vice-President, Liz Kluever, said there was going to be a family picnic on the school playground, she wasn’t kidding! On September 27, over 500 people came out to enjoy the beautiful weather, great food, and lots of Panther camaraderie.  “We’re one big family here at MPE, so when we plan a picnic, it’s more like a family reunion,” said Liz in between visiting with other parents.

Mike Bateman, head of the MPE Dad’s Club, rounded up all the dads and got them pumped up for grilling and serving some delicious food. “The MPE All-School picnic has become a great annual tradition. Our Dad’s club really enjoys grilling, and seeing the students, parents, and faculty enjoying their time together. This year we joined forces with Dad’s club member and owner of Urban Crust, Salvatore Gisellu. Urban Crust donated all the food, ‘fixins’, and his portable kitchen to take the picnic to a whole new level.”

Taking an evening off from their downtown Plano restaurant, Urban Crust, Jeanne-Marie and Salvatore Gisellu commented on the event. "We feel fortunate to live in such a supportive, close knit community and to have our children attend an outstanding public school. Hosting the all school picnic at Merriman Park was a great way for us to give back to the community as well as let everyone know about Urban Crust."

All the kids were especially excited when they saw their teachers show up! Alisa Bettega, a 3rd grade teacher, came with her dog to enjoy the gathering. “I love going to the school picnic because it just makes me so proud to be a part of MPE!  I was absolutely amazed by the number of families that showed up even after we had to reschedule because of rain the previous week.  The Dad's club was working so hard to get everyone served, picnic blankets covered our field, and the kids looked like they were having the time of their lives. We have the most amazing, supportive families here at MPE!”

All involved had a fantastic evening and are counting down the days until next year’s MPE All-School Picnic!
