"Little Cook in Peris," a band of talented student musicians at Lake Highlands High School, took first place in the school's Battle of the Bands competition before an enthusiastic crowd of 150 people on Thursday night.

The band competition, sponsored annually as a fundraiser by the school's Aid for Refugees (AiR) student club, raised more than $1,400 for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refuees to assist refugees, said Siobhan Kelley, president of Lake Highland's AiR club.

"Every year, students gather the local talent in a friendly competition of rock, folk and Indie music to raise money to support children and adults who have been forcibly displaced from their homes through warfare, famine, natural disasters and political repression," Kelley said. "Lake Highlands is the proud home to many of these refugees."

Winning members of "Little Cook" include Brandon Cook, Andrew Little, Forrest Brown and Vedant Peris.

A talented band called "The Brethren," a group of LHHS sophomores, took second place in the competition. Members of this band included Zach Penix, Tyler Squires and Mason Murray.

The Lake Highlands Bell Boys — Jackson Borg, Luke Gholston, Zach Kissentaner and Blake Lueder — served as hosts for Battle of the Bands. Award-winning student actor and singer Doug Keffer, a senior, served as creative director and producer for the program.
