Nexus Recovery Center, a nonprofit offering specialized substance use disorder treatment services for adult women in Dallas, has been the leader and expert in recovery efforts in North Texas for nearly 50 years. This September - National Recovery Month - the agency is noting recovery efforts and treatment services, as well as recovery celebrations, are especially critical in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At a time when hospitals are full with COVID-19 patients and the journey to recovery can already feel isolated or lonely, it’s important for women to have a safe place to pursue treatment - and that’s where Nexus Recovery Center steps in,” said Heather Ormand, CEO of Nexus Recovery Center. “As someone who has been in recovery for nearly a decade, I personally know the importance of having a strong community throughout the recovery journey. To provide that community and support, Nexus Recovery Center removes all boundaries to treatment for a woman. We’re the only treatment center in North Texas that allows children to accompany their mothers to treatment, and we break down any financial barriers that may be preventing someone from seeking help.”

With the outbreak of COVID-19, Nexus Recovery Center expects relapse rates to rise. Between 40-60% of people that are treated for substance use disorder experience at least one relapse before achieving long-term sobriety. In the absence of 12-step meetings or support from faith-based organizations, those at risk for relapse have few places to turn. From March 1 to July 31, Nexus Recovery Center treated more than 860 clients and 25 percent reported being homeless. Yet, while treating so many different clients and having more than 100 women and children living on-campus, Nexus Recovery Center has kept each client COVID-free thanks to strict protocols and a dedicated staff.

“It is the Nexus Recovery Center staff that makes this agency so successful and lifesaving for so many women,” said Ormand. “Many members of our staff are alumnae of Nexus Recovery Center, so they are genuinely able to relate to the clients and understand what they need to succeed once they leave our four walls. These staff are true frontline workers during this time, taking in women and children with nowhere else to go each day and putting these clients’ health needs above their own. I’m so lucky to work with such an outstanding group of professionals.”

“Nexus Recovery Center is a true gem in the heart of Dallas, and I am thankful our city has an organization committed to breaking the cycle of addiction,” said Niki Prince, Nexus Recovery Center Director of Recovery Support Services and Nexus Recovery Center alumna. “As a Nexus Recovery Center alumna, I am able to relate to the women I work with on a daily basis and understand their struggles, while helping them pursue various support services such as housing or furthering their education.”

Nexus Recovery Center is planning a variety of National Recovery Month celebrations for both clients and alumnae throughout September, including its National Recovery Month picnic and weekly activities such as costume contests, artistic activities and creating an annual Nexus t-shirt for staff and clients. The entire month is a chance to celebrate the freedom and joy that comes with recovery.
