The Altrusa Club of Downtown Dallas voted Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at the club's monthly business meeting to begin an Astra Club at the Young Womens Preparatory Network at Irma Rangel Leadership Academy.
An Astra Club is a service club for 12 to 25 year olds, and will be modeled after the Altrusa Club of Downtown Dallas. Past Altrusa Club President Kim Schonwald will be the liaison between the two clubs. She is the owner of Bookkeeping in Motion and has been a member of the Altrusa Club of Downtown Dallas since 2007. The Altrusa Club has given deserving graduating seniors scholarships to college for the past two years, and has supported the school with many service projects over the past three years.
This month the Downtown Altrusans will be working at their annual Thanksgiving Basket Delivery from November 19 - 23rd. Members take food to families who have signed up with the Shared Housing Center on 402 N. Good Latimer Expressway, Dallas, TX 75204.
Turkeys and food baskets will be delivered by the Altrusa Club members on Thursday November 19th, Friday November 20th, Saturday November 21st, and Monday November 23rd.
In addition to multiple service projects throughout the year, the club has social events for its members. This month is the Art Show & Lunch event, Saturday November 14th featuring artwork by club member and professional artist Danah Moore, including metal sculptures by Max Moore. The club also has a monthly book club and this month it includes a brunch at a member’s home.
The Altrusa Club of Downtown Dallas boasts over 70 members and meets twice a month at the City Club on the 69th floor of the Bank of America building downtown. Professional men and women who are interested in service to the Dallas community can attend a meeting and apply to join.
