Former Green Beret Commander Mark Nutsch

Sons of the Flag, a Dallas-based organization that supports military, veteran, and first responder burn survivors and their families through funding for innovative research, treatment and education, will hold its fifth annual Stars & Stripes Luncheon and Film Festival event presented by the Corrigan-Goddard Foundation on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at Brook Hollow Golf Club.  The luncheon, presented by Clay Cooley Auto Group, kicks off the organization's always anticipated Stars & Stripes Film Festival, which is presented by Stripe-A-Zone.  The film festival will be held at Highland Park Village Theater Thursday to Saturday, November 8-10.  Proceeds benefit Sons of the Flag and its work on behalf of military, first responder and civilian burn victims.

"The Stars & Stripes Luncheon and Film Festival continues to be our most important fundraising event each year as we work to support veterans, first responders and civilians with advanced burn treatment and education," said Ryan "Birdman" Parrott, former Navy SEAL and founder of Sons of the Flag.  "We are thrilled to have Green Beret Commander Nutsch with us this year to share about one of the most unique and successful military campaigns in modern history.  His story will inspire us as we continue our efforts on behalf of others trying to overcome their own seemingly insurmountable odds--burn victims."

Commander Nutsch was portrayed by actor Chris Hemsworth in the 2018 major motion picture, "12 Strong."  The film shares the now-declassified, true-life story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11.  Under Nutsch's leadership, the team must work with an Afghan warlord to take down the Taliban, eventually securing victory in what is considered the most successful unconventional warfare campaign in modern history. In addition to serving as the luncheon keynote, Commander Nutsch will participate in an audience Q&A following a special screening of "12 Strong" for bronze level and higher patrons on Wednesday, November 7th.

At the luncheon, The Honorable Allen B. Clark will be presented with the Sons of the Flag Legacy Award.  Clark is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) who was stationed as a military intelligence officer assigned to the Fifth Special Forces Group in Vietnam.  On June 17, 1967 an early morning mortar attack damaged his legs, which later had to be amputated.  His military service and sacrifice were recognized with a Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.  After his military career ended, Clark earned an MBA from Southern Methodist University and began working as an investment manager for Ross Perot.  He went on to success in various industries from oil and gas exploration to real estate and banking.  Clark also served in various appointed roles, including in the administrations of Texas Governor Clements and President Reagan and President George H.W. Bush.  He retired in 2005 while serving as the public affairs officer for the VA North Texas Health Care System in Dallas.  Currently, Clark leads Combat Faith, which is involved in outreach efforts to help active duty military personnel and veterans recover from the traumas of combat and adverse wartime experiences.

The Stars & Stripes Film Festival celebrates the nation's finest as represented in military-themed films, which were selected in partnership with the Dallas Film Society.  This year's film lineup:

Thursday, November 8, 7:00 PM - Inglourious Basterds

Friday, November 9, 7:00 PM – Full Metal Jacket

Saturday, November 10, 7:30 PM – Mister Roberts

Tickets for the luncheon, which is chaired by William and Mary C. Corrigan, are $300.  More information about tickets and sponsorships can be found at www.sonsoftheflag.org or by contacting Sherry Atkins at sherry@sonsoftheflag.org or 469-930-6694.
