Monster Yogurt and its partners are getting ready for the annual book drive benefitting local kids.

The store’s owner, Ava Skipworth, started the book drive nine years ago, one year after the Casa Linda store opened.

Growing up, Skipworth couldn’t read. It wasn’t until high school when she was diagnosed with dyslexia and a teacher began helping her every day after school. That was the first time she ever finished a book.

“If you can read, you can do anything,” she says.

In the first year, about 250 children’s books were collected and donated to a local school. Skipworth, who lives in the Dallas area, had to buy books so every student could have one

Five years ago, a group called Moms Out Marketing got involved and expanded the drive to include more drop-off locations.

Last year, 4,000 books were donated to neighborhood elementary schools, Dallas Art Therapy, Anne’s Place, little libraries and more.

Books may be dropped off at Monster Yogurt (at 9540 Garland Road and at 1360 W. Campbell Road in Richardson) throughout February. One ounce of yogurt can be exchanged for each book donated, up to 5 ounces.

A dessert shop in our neighborhood is hanging with the heavyweights in a list of the best froyo shops in the USA

Monster Yogurt was on of just 13 shops named to the list, compiled by the digital food publication Delish.  Monster Yogurt, which opened in Casa Linda Plaza in 2012 has only two locations.  The second in Richardson.
Delish described Monster Yogurt like this:
Eating frozen treats should make you feel like a kid again, an this scary good chain in Texas checks that box in more ways than one.  The stores alone are any kid's dream, complete with an indoor playground, and the self-service yogurt stations let customers divide their cups to keep flavors separate, or mix them all together.  Topping options even include seasonal candies like candy corn.

DALLAS, TEXAS, Febuary 19, 2019 – Monster Yogurt is gearing up for Read Across America,  February 1 - March 2, 2021 at all locations including: Dallas, 9540 Garland Rd Suite 394 Dallas, TX 75218, Richardson, 1360 W Campbell Rd Suite 101 Richardson, TX 75080.. Starting February 1st, all locations will be taking book  donations to be delivered to a local low-income children on March 2nd in support of Read Across America.  Local yogurt-lovers are encouraged to donate new or gently-used books so that no child is left behind  when it comes to enriching themselves through the written word and immersing themselves in the world  of books.

Area residents can start the New Year off right by decluttering and rehoming the greatest of gifts: books!  NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every  child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr.  Seuss. In addition, Monster Yogurt will trade one free ounce of frozen yogurt for every donation (up to 5  once’s free). At some schools, books are desperately needed and research has shown that children  growing up in homes without books, where books are considered a luxury, are less likely to complete a  basic education than their peers who do have books available at home.

“We are a place to go with kids in tow without spending a lot of dough, so to speak,” says Chris Mireles,  Monster Yogurt general manager, “And we’re always looking for ways to empower young people. In fact,  we take pride in offering first job experience for many of neighborhood teens. What’s the point of owning  a small local business if you can’t give back? So we’re looking forward to delivering enough books for each  child to take home. Many of the children would never own a book, otherwise.”

According to the NEA’s website, motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement  and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend  more time reading, do better in school. NEA's Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents,  caregivers, and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a  year.

Customers can drop off one book or a few starting February 1st and enjoy some of the best yogurt in town  as a reward - all the while knowing the impact their contribution has had on a local child - as if that wasn’t  a “sweet” enough reward.

For more information and media coverage on sales through February and the delivery of books on March  2nd, please visit, email or call 214-321-6363.
