Scofield leadership wants to reach as many families as possible with the good news of Christ, so school tuition is affordable for our community.  Tuition and fees only cover 95% of the actual cost of the instructional program.  The Annual Fund provides the funds needed to fill the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Christian school education.

Lake Highlands’ Scofield Christian School competed in the South Central District Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Art Festival held at the Hope Center in Plano, Texas on March 29-30, 2016.  Scofield Christian School qualified to submit 39 entries and received top honors for 18 art pieces. Students received eight first-place awards, six second-place awards and four third-place awards. Only pieces that had been awarded superior distinctions were eligible to compete for over-all first, second and third place awards.  All 39 of the entries won either an excellent or superior ribbon.

Overall there were 500 art entries, kindergarten through twelfth grade, from 19 schools that competed in the festival.  Scofield Christian School students submitted artwork in a variety of categories such as pottery, painting, weaving, photography, sculpture and clay.  There were almost 20 categories represented at the art festival.  Judging took around 8 hours to complete with a crew of almost 50 judges.

“I am so proud of our students.  Many of the art pieces we entered required precision and creativity. Their final pieces are an excellent representation of their hard work and imagination that they use weekly in art class,” said Mrs. Kelly Pittman, art teacher for Scofield Christian School.  Pittman has been teaching art for 13 years and is an accomplished local artist. One of her favorite parts of being an art teacher is to see where her students end up as they are formed into wonderful adults.

Art is a valuable component of Scofield Christian School’s academic curriculum.  "Our students are introduced and taught the Fine Arts beginning in preschool all the way through sixth grade with age appropriate classes and concepts.  Art is part of Scofield Christian School’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum.  Art is key in enhancing the learning process and engaging in all academic areas,” said Dr. Shailendra Thomas, Head of School for Scofield Christian School.

Scofield Christian School Earns SACS CASI Accreditation

(Dallas, TX – April 4, 2016) – Head of School, Dr. Shailendra Thomas announced today that Scofield Christian School earned accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED.  This action was taken at the AdvancED Accreditation Commission meeting held in Orlando, Florida on January 28, 2016.

SACS CASI provides nationally-recognized accreditation, the purpose of which is continuous school improvement focused on increasing student performance.  To earn accreditation, schools must meet SACS CASI’s high standards, be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school and implement a continuous process of school improvement.

“Accreditation demonstrates to our students, parents and community that we are focused on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation staffed by highly qualified educators,” stated Dr. Thomas.

SACS CASI accreditation is recognized across state lines, which not only eases the transfer process as students move from accredited school to accredited school but also assures parents that the school is meeting nationally accepted standards for quality and successful professional practice.

Dr. Mark Elgart, President/CEO of AdvancED, the parent organization of SACS CASI, stated, “SACS CASI Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners.  Scofield Christian School is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.”

Parents and interested community members can learn more about accreditation at www.advanc-ed.org.

Scofield Christian School (SCS) is pleased to announce three students won awards at recent area art competitions.  Brennan Boyd received a first place award at The State Fair of Texas’ Creative Arts competition in the Children’s Designer/Craftsman contest.   Amelia Thomas received an honorable mention award at The State Fair of Texas’ Creative Arts competition in the Children’s Shoebox Float Contest.   Ronnie Satterfield received first prize in the Nasher Sculpture Center “Make your Mark” City-wide Summer Art Bookmark Contest for the second through fourth-grade category. This contest was part of the Dallas Public Library Mayor's Summer Reading Club program.

For his State Fair entry, Boyd, a fifth-grader at SCS, created his winter snowmen from glass and rusty metal he has collected throughout the years.  “I walk with my family often and I collected the metal and glass I used on these walks with them,” Boyd said.  When asked what his inspiration was he said “Even though it was in the summer, snowmen came to mind and so I wanted to do an art piece on snowmen.”

Thomas, a first-grader at SCS, made a fair inspired show box float.  “I really like art and I was thinking about Big Tex and he inspired me,” she said.  She created various state fair foods and a replica of Big Tex for her float.

The Nasher Scuplture Center, presented Satterfield, a third-grader at SCS, his award on September 5 during the Target First Saturday program.  Artists were instructed to design a bookmark inspired by their experiences at the Nasher Sculpture Center.   “Trying to create and keep the design in the space allotted was challenging but the process was fun,” said Satterfield.

Congratulations to Scofield Christian School graduate, Mark Garwood, who was recently selected as a Richardson Independent School District (RISD) 2016 National Merit Semifinalist.  Mark is among eight RISD students selected.  These students were named by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. based on outstanding academic performance on the Preliminary SAT or National Merit Qualifying Test taken as juniors. Their performance ranks them in the top one percent nationally among more than 1.5 million students.

Mark is a senior at Lake Highlands High School, where he is the Senior Class Treasurer.  He is also the A Cappella Choir vice president and a singer in Espree, the school’s pop music show choir.   Other school and community activities include being involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a worship/study leader, National Honor Society member, Mu Alpha Theta member and a member of the Science Club.  He is involved in his church youth choir and has attended 5 mission trips with them.  Mark is a proud Eagle Scout and his Eagle Scout project was building the flagstone path to the Scofield Christian School Butterfly Garden.  Mark is in the middle of college decisions but he is interested in studying chemistry, math and engineering.

His parents said “We are all grateful for the spiritual and academic foundation that Scofield provided to Mark, along with his triplet brothers Luke and Josh.  We have all benefited from the fine education and nurturing they received during their seven years at SCS.”

As a school family we are thrilled to hear about Mark’s successes and wish him and his family the best of luck!
